Make sure your pets always have access to plenty of fresh, cool water.
For horses, providing water containing electrolytes can help them re-balance vital salts and minerals that they will lose through sweating. However you must always also provide a separate source of cool water as some horses will not drink water with electrolytes.
For dogs, try adding a few ice cubes to their water to make it cooler. If taking your dog out and about take some water and a bowl with you.
Ensuring your horse has access to shade when turned out enables them to get some relief from the sun. A field shelter enables them to completely escape the sun’s rays, but trees and hedges can provide some shade too and horses will usually find these spots.
If your horse is normally stabled at night, during periods of hot weather you could reverse this so that they are stabled through the warmer days and are out at night when it is cooler.
Don’t ride during very hot periods of the day, and keep sessions short to ensure you are not overworking your horse.
Dogs should ideally be walked early morning and later at night when it is cooler. Dogs might love a swim too if there's a safe place to do so near you. If not a child's plastic paddling pool makes the ultimate place for water loving pooches to cool down.
Light coloured animals are particularly susceptible to sunburn and especially those with white socks and blazes, pink noses, or hairless patches.
Fly sheets can help to protect light coloured horses from sunburn and many fly rugs of the market come with some UV protection.
Applying sun cream to sensitive areas on your pets such as the muzzle or nose can help prevent them burning.
Clipping horses and dogs with longer coats can help them cool down more easily. However you should not clip too close to animals coat, as the hair can provide some protection against the sun’s rays.
The soar in temperature can also cause a soar in fly population. Flies can be particularly bothersome to horses so it is vital that you ensure your horse has adequate protection by using a combination of fly rug, fly mask and fly spray. Some fly rugs like Horseware’s Amigo with Vamoose are infused with Vamoose fly repellent which means you don’t need to spray the horse with fly spray before rugging them.

When horses work hard, or during hot weather, they regulate their body temperature by sweating.
Sweating not only loses fluid as it evaporates, but also essential body salts, particularly sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium.
Failure to replace these body salts (known as electrolytes) can result in fatigue, and in extreme cases, damage to muscle, bone and cartilage tissue.
Electro Salts is a concentrated combination of the essential plasma salts in combination with dextrose to aid efficient absorption of the salts.
Electro Salts should be fed following exertion, after heavy sweating or during periods of very hot weather.
Electro Salts can be given easily in the feed, or dissolved in water.
Always ensure a supply of clean fresh water is readily available.
