The Riding Tight Revolution

Written by

We're heading for a revolution in the horse riding world. Gone are the days of stiff fabrics that are difficult to move in, that sit heavy and don't breathe. Now suppliers utilise so many high tech fabrics that help keep us cool, are breathable, wick away moisture and they are easy to move about in, making for a more comfortable ride.

This technological advancement has been happening for some time now, starting in cross country tops and baselayers, and then making it to show shirts, show jackets and finally in the last year or so we've seen the birth of the riding tight. Evidence suggests the riding tight is likely to become a mainstay with more and more suppliers opting to bring a 'riding tight' into their range.

To help you navigate through this new era and pick up the perfect pair here's our low-down on some of the best the industry currently has to offer:

Noble Balance Riding Tights

What Noble say:

  • Optimum combination of equestrian performance and fit
  • Next level, innovative design and high-recovery stretch fabric designed to give a flattering fit
  • Opti-Dry Technology wicks moisture away
  • Toray Ultrasuede knee patches for grip
  • Secure pocket at front thigh
  • Lightweight stretch hem reduces bulk inside boot

Our thoughts:

Noble have totally cracked it! The balance riding tight offers a stretchy comfortable fit that still retains some vital 'breech' features. There's knee patches to help give you that extra grip and ensure they aren't too slippy in the saddle. The tights are slimline with little bulk ensuring they fit into your boots with no problems. Plus the secure pocket is really handy for your must haves. They offer a flattering fit providing stretch and ease of movement whilst ensuring they still support you and hold in any lumps and bumps. Available in several colours we'd definitely recommend investing in a pair.

Horseware Ladies Riding Tights

What Horseware say:

  • Lightweight & breathable
  • Cool mesh side panels for optimum temperature control
  • Antibacterial fabric with wicking properties
  • UPF 30 sun protection
  • Side pocket

Our thoughts:

These are the ultimate gym to yard tights. They offer a great fit and provide great ease of movement whilst also offering support. With two handy thigh pockets you can keep your essentials like keys and mobile on you without them becoming a nuisance or restricting your movement. The suede effect knee patch went quite high up and offered protection up the upper thigh which was great when riding and stopped them from being slippy. The UPF is a great extra feature for the summer months.

We weren't too sure of the Galaxy print off the hanger but on they looked great and were a firm favourite. You would definitely feel at home whether you were at the gym exercising or out riding in these fabulous tights.

Shires Paris Riding Leggings

What Shires Say:

  • Easy to wear and super comfortable stretch leggings designed for horse riding
  • The technical fabric keeps moisture levels low and dries quickly

Our thoughts:

A lightweight flexible legging that would be great in the summer months. The reflective strip on the leg is a great addition for when out hacking. The zip up pocket at the back of the waist would hold your mobile and keys and was really handy and again didn't interfere with movement in the saddle. The adjustable waist meant they were easy to pull on and then could be tightened once on to fit your shape perfectly. Available in a great range of colours.

The lack of knee patches made them slightly slippery in the saddle, however they are really comfortable and would be perfect for the summer months.

Bridleway Cheviot Pull On Leggings

What Bridleway say:

  • Breathable and lightweight fabric to keep you comfortable in the saddle
  • Secure phone pocket
  • Silicone print BW logo knee grips.

Our Thoughts:

Excellent value riding tight which allowed for great move-ability. The sticky silicone knee grip was one of the best in the feature. It offered great stick in the saddle without impeding on the flexibility of the fabric or restricting movement. The contoured leg gave a really flattering fit and they looked fantastic on. These tights would look good when you were working out too as the silicone knee patch was very discreet. The elasticated ankle cuff ensured a close fit right to the bottom of the leg.

Dublin Ladies Warm It Riding Tights

What Dublin say:

  • Ultimate performance riding tight for winter.
  • The stretch fabric keeps you warm as well as allowing freedom of movement
  • PU silicone print gel seat provides optimum grip and stability in the saddle.

Our Thoughts:

One of the favourites tested these tights offered flexbility whilst maintaining the most 'breech like' feel. They offered brilliant support and would definitely be a good choice for someone buying their first pair of riding tights. The shaping is super flattering and hugs your figure whilst ironing out any lumps or bumps. The full sticky seat ensured great stick in the saddle. The heavier weight fabric would help keep you warm during winter months but still offered incredible freedom of movement. Dublin also do a cool-it version with a lighter weight fabric for the summer.
